There is good reason why pilots need to submit a flight plan before they take off – and it is indeed a simple plan; as they only need to log where they go, the route they intend to follow and the ETA.

Filing a trip plan is a great form of insurance, on condition that you are able to contact loved ones or friends, who will be expecting the call, at strategic points.

If you prefer unplanned trips where you go where your nose leads you, then at least regularly let someone know where you are and which way you are heading.

Often overlooked is getting procedures in place to effect when you do not get to your check points at the expected time.
